July 11, 2010

Coming back across a multitude of mountain passes on our way back to Gryon. We stopped to see what is left of the Rhone Glacier.

Therme Vals, 1996, Peter Zumthor. Vals.
Peter Zumthor is one of my all time favourite architects, and this is the building that I most admire. Having read about it and seen countless photos, I finally got to visit, and the experience in no way dissapointed. There is no silence in this building, the sounds of running water is constant, and the light, entering indirectly through slits in the suspended concrete roof, was mesmerising. This photo was taken over the entry to our favourite pool, where you are forced to swim through a darkened tunnel in order to emerge into a small cave, lit from below the water. Magic.

Saint Benedict's Chapel, 1985-1988, Peter Zumthor and Analisa Zumthor-Courad. Sumvitg.

Bundner Kuntsmuseum, 1981-1990, Peter Zumthor. Chur.
