July 31, 2010

In preparation for Swiss Day, all of the flags are flying. It is great to see, when all of the houses get decorated in red and white, and the flags of the Swiss Cantons. Our village's flag is below.

July 30, 2010

An afternoon in Vevey, and the girls and I went on the most beautiful old carousel.

July 29, 2010

The view from the swimming pool. It was a very chilly swim today, the girls and I only lasted an hour!

July 28, 2010

The fair is in town for the Swiss Day (August 1) celebrations.

July 27, 2010

My favourite shopping street in Vevey, Rue du Lac.

July 26, 2010

An outing to the Labrynth Adventure.

July 25, 2010

A rainbow over the valley.

July 24, 2010

The moon rises over the village.

July 23, 2010

We went down to Vevey to see a movie at the summer Open Air Cinema. The storm coming across Lake Geneva was slowly obscuring France.

July 22, 2010

A quiet little spot outside one of the chalets we look after.

July 21, 2010

The best pie in Switzerland.

July 20, 2010

Little Philly turned 5 today, so we went to the Parc Aventure for the kids to do the high ropes course.

July 19, 2010

Oops, I think I forgot a photo today! So here is another from Karl and I at the Montreux Jazz festival. We went down a couple of times, and enjoyed some great free concerts.

July 18, 2010

An evening walk to watch the sun set.

July 17, 2010

Chilling out at the world famous Montreux Jazz Festival.

July 16, 2010

In the autumn I pruned the hostel roses to within an inch of their life, but now they are rewarding us all with a spectacular display of colour!

July 16, 2010

The reason I can still lose weight, despite my new found addiction to white Toblerone. This is the walk back from the post office, and that is our apartment straight ahead (the one with the white sheets hanging out to dry!). There is certainly no need for stairmasters around here.

July 15, 2010

Spot the butterfly! Peony and I visited a butterfly sanctuary today. There were hundreds of them, and it really was something to be seen.

July 14, 2010

The flowers are out on the hill at Les Chaux.

July 13, 2010

Two very little people, exploring one very big mountain.
This area is our local ski resort in the winter, but in the summer it is a great place to walk around, especially as there is a telecabine to bring you up to the top, and a train to take you down! My kind of hiking.

July 12, 2010

Parc Gryon. A daily ritual recently.

July 11, 2010

Coming back across a multitude of mountain passes on our way back to Gryon. We stopped to see what is left of the Rhone Glacier.

Therme Vals, 1996, Peter Zumthor. Vals.
Peter Zumthor is one of my all time favourite architects, and this is the building that I most admire. Having read about it and seen countless photos, I finally got to visit, and the experience in no way dissapointed. There is no silence in this building, the sounds of running water is constant, and the light, entering indirectly through slits in the suspended concrete roof, was mesmerising. This photo was taken over the entry to our favourite pool, where you are forced to swim through a darkened tunnel in order to emerge into a small cave, lit from below the water. Magic.

Saint Benedict's Chapel, 1985-1988, Peter Zumthor and Analisa Zumthor-Courad. Sumvitg.

Bundner Kuntsmuseum, 1981-1990, Peter Zumthor. Chur.

July 10, 2010

Heidi Weber Pavilion, 1965, Le Corbusier. Zurich.
KKL (Luzern Culture and Congress Center), 1999, Rob Zundstrasse. Luzern.

Maison Blanche, 1912, Le Corbusier. La Chaux-de-Fonds.

As an anniversary present, Karl took me on an architectural tour of Switzerland. We saw some incredible buildings, and enjoyed some great new places. We listened to some fantastic music at the Luzern Festival, walked along the lake in Zurich, and spent the night in a village in Liechtenstien.

July 9, 2010

In preparation for our little architecture tour tomorrow, I did some reading on the buildings we were planning to visit, and I discovered that the old guy on our 10chf note is Le Corbusier himself!

July 8, 2010

The girls and I thought we would take the train up to Bretaye this afternoon, and joined 40+ Beau Soleil kids onboard. Unfortunately, the train only made it half way up, and then got stuck, so the girls and I had to be content with ice cream and deck chairs.

July 7, 2010

An interesting Swiss tradition of soap in public bathrooms. Not sure how keen I am on this little gem.

July 6, 2010

An afternoon swimming in the coldest pool I have ever encountered. Philly braved it, but Peony and I were content on the side.

July 5, 2010

Philly making a new friend. He did well, until she decided he could use a bath. Turns out snails don't much like soap.

July 4, 2010

Oops, forgot a photo today. I only remembered at 9.30pm, so this is the colours off our balcony as the sun sets behind us.

July 3, 2010

An afternoon of friends, sun and wine. Perfect.

July 2, 2010

Who said living in a 35sqm apartment meant we couldn't have a garden? We have our first tomatoes, and the broccoli and cauliflower are well on their way.

July 1, 2010

Today's photo comes courtesy of Philly, who insisted we stick out our tongues!

June 30, 2010

The girls and I went to a local farm today to meet some baby (and some not so baby) animals, including Cecilia the pig.

June 29, 2010

I started a new job today, as au pair for Ophelia and Peony. Today we went for ice cream at the Gryon Park.

June 28, 2010

An evening walk to watch the sunset, and made a few new friends.

June 27, 2010

An afternoon with Charlie. We played by the river with his little bathtub, great fun on a hot afternoon.

June 26, 2010

The Dent du Midi, as seen from Anna and DJ's chalet.

June 25, 2010

We planted the vegetable garden at the hostel this morning. It certainly is a garden with a view.

June 24, 2010

Babysitting tonight at Le Petit Loup, there was an amazing sunset.

June 23, 2010

The bridge between our little village of Gryon and the resort town of Villars. After my Dad passed away, I found a photo of my sister standing on this bridge. None of us had realised at the time, but my Dad and sister had passed through our little village many years ago on their way to meet me in Germany.

June 22, 2010

Elizabeth and I went to Geneva so I could go to the Australian Embassy, and took the opportunity for a spot of shopping. These vases were made entirely of newspaper and looked fantastic! They were ridiculously expensive (well, it is Switzerland) so I couldn't bring myself to buy one, but Elizabeth thinks we might be able to make them ourselves, so I met get one afterall.

June 21, 2010

This is one for all the Aussies. We don't have Twisties in Switzerland, but Fonzies come close!
